Doing it Differently… Non-Traditional Romance and Second Chances

So, as I’m sure you know by now, the February theme for the Dirty Birdies is non-traditional romance/second chances, that kind of thing. When I looked at my backlist, I realised that actually, I’ve probably written more non-traditional stuff that I have traditional!

Wedding Dress For Happy Couple in LoveTraditional, I guess, means anything that’s not boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl live happily ever after. Though I sincerely hope this is changing, what with marriage equality being on the rise (hurrah!) and more same-sex couples having or adopting children, etc. Perhaps in ten years time there will be no such thing as non-traditional, just people loving whomever they want. But anyway, I digress.

Gillian Jacobs Lesbian KissAs I said, I’ve penned quite a lot of non-traditional romance, more than I realised, actually! Looking at my books, it seems I particularly favour writing lesbian romance (which is my best-selling genre), and I’ve also got a gay story out there (it’s more erotica than romance), some ménage stuff, as well as tales of lost loves and second chances. I’ve never intentionally set out to write something that’s non-traditional, but ideas of all different kinds of stories pop into my head, so I just write them. I’m not really bothered what themes or norms they fit into, just that I’m (hopefully) writing a great story! I’ll continue to do this throughout my writing career, too!

Loose EndsHere are a few examples of my non-traditional romance and erotica:

The Military Wife: Contains a second chance erotic romance story called Passing Out Passion.

Loose Ends: A second chance/reunion erotic romance.

No Boys Allowed: Lesbian erotic romance.

Ditched: M/M erotica.

Weekend at Wilderhope Manor: Lesbian erotic romance.

A Menu with a Difference: Ménage erotica.

And, now that I think about it, some of the stuff that’s out on submission or currently being worked on is along those lines, too, including my first ménage erotic romance! It seems I’ve caught the non-traditional romance bug without even knowing it. And do you know what? I really don’t mind. A good story is a good story, no matter who is loving who, or why, or how.

Happy Reading!

Please Excuse Me While I Hibernate!

I’m not a fan of this time of year. Where I live, in the UK, it gets dark around 5pm, it’s cold and often rainy and windy. Granted, there are some beautiful, crisp days, but they’re so short that there’s barely any time to enjoy them. Dark mornings and nights make it harder for me to get out of bed, and want to crawl back into it at about 7pm (it’d be earlier, but I won’t miss dinner! 😉 ). Really, what I’d love to do is hibernate. I’d miss the short days, save a fortune on Christmas presents, and never have to see frost, ice and snow. How wonderful!

At the risk of sounding like a total grump, there are benefits to November. The colours of the leaves on the trees (and on the ground!) are beautiful. Cold, wet, short days do not make me want to bunk off and go out somewhere, or take the dog for a long walk. They don’t make me stare wistfully out of the window, wishing I wasn’t working. Therefore I do tend to knuckle down and get on with things more. Especially writing. So, although I’m not taking part in NaNoWriMo (I just write what I can, when I can – guaranteed money jobs have to come first!), November tends to be a pretty good month for me in terms of word count. Which will come in handy as I have a novel to finish, and a couple of deadlines. So, wish me luck!

Wrap up warm everyone, and happy reading! 😀
