Writing to Music and Memories with @MeganSlayer #music #inspiration #iamwriting

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately and trying to write. Sounds a little odd, right? Trying to write? Sometimes the words are there, but getting them onto paper or the screen isn’t easy. Life gets in the way, despite the characters not stopping to understand that, and I can’t always get everything jotted down.

So I was thinking, driving and listening to the radio… As I’m going along on my way to a sporting event for my tot, a song came over the radio that reminded me of my characters. Not from the current WIP, but a new one. I’ve usually got two WIPs going at one time, but this one was way out of left field. I have the general outline in my head and did manage to get it down on paper so I can get to it later.

But that driving trip got me thinking about how music has been so influential in my life and writing. I need playlists to write. I need to be inspired. When I was a kid, I used to sit right next to my gigantic boom box and listen to the nightly top ten countdown on my local radio station. I’d write down the songs because if I called in and was the tenth caller (or whatever number they requested that night) who could recall the list…then you won a free cassette tape. I used to try and win every night. I had the list mostly memorized. I never did win, but those songs are still with me. I hear them and think of being a kid again. I remember the thrill of listening to the new tunes, being inspired to create art and maybe get lucky enough to win. I never did, but hey, it was still fun.

Maybe I should use that story for one of my books. Grin. Speaking of being inspired, the highly anticipated next book in my Sanctuary Series drops this week. Saving His Roar!!

Saving His Roar by Megan Slayer

A Sanctuary Story

Book 9

M/M, Anal Sex

Paranormal, Contemporary

From Resplendence Publishing

Ryan ‘Blaze’ Burden knew his life wasn’t perfect. He’s a stripper at Stiff and a shifter, but he can’t tell anyone about his special ability. The popularity of shifters hasn’t come to Stiff or the town of Sugar Ridge, for that matter. Being a shifter is still frowned upon. Ryan knows he doesn’t fit in, but he does have one bright spot in his life—the mystery man who comes to the club and requests Ryan for private dances. The electricity between them is palpable, but if Ryan makes a move, will the hottie reciprocate?

Delaney Sullivan doesn’t come to Stiff for the ambiance. He’s there for one dancer—Blaze. He senses the shifter within the handsome young man. But Delaney works for the enemy—he’s the campaign manager for the mayor of Sugar Ridge. He doesn’t share the mayor’s desire to outlaw shifters because he’s a panther shifter. Can he get Blaze out of the club? To trust him? Or maybe even to love him?

These opposites certainly attract, but can they find the mutual trust to have a future together?

Writing and Music… My Blurred Reality Playlist @MeganSlayer #music #writing #contemporaryromance #romance #dfrkw

I wasn’t sure what to write about today so I thought I’d talk about my contribution to the Dallas Fire and Rescue Kindle World, Blurred Reality. In my novella, my hero is a musician and famous. The other hero? Not so much. To get into the headspace for their story of accidents, a crazy Labrador retriever and crazed fans plus romance… I had to have some tunes of my own to listen to and often. What’d I listen to?

Killpop by Slipknot – I love the sensuality and manicness of this song. It’s sexy, but a little unhinged. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhJh5_6MuCk)

It’s No Good by Depeche Mode – again, it’s sensual and made for getting in the mood to write the love scenes easier. Plus, the video is silly. I watched it as a stress-reliever. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aieEZ950d1I)

Sympathy for the Devil by Motorhead – this song seemed to fit a lot of the music the band Disaster Transport, the hero’s band, would play. I love this version because it’s gritty and Lemmy’s voice fits it so well. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt4Xx3vX3Lg)

Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp – this song is a tad before my time, but I love it and it fit the story. Every time I heard it, I’d be jazzed to write more. It made those characters talk a ton!! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsV-rQ23bus)

In a Mist and Singin’ the Blues by Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Traumbauer – these along with a few other jazz songs inspired the hero’s love of music and his desire to play more than just rollicking music. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ue9igC7flI)

Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller – another soft, romantic song that inspired the sensual scenes in Blurred Reality. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuVfmfaNupQ)

I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick – it’s a good, fast song that helped write the action scenes. Grin. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJs_L7yq5qE)

I have more on the playlist. Some by Benny Goodman, a few by Duke Ellington, most of the Evans Blue albums and a few Beatles tunes.

I need music to write mostly because I can’t write with silence. It just doesn’t work. What about you? Do you like noise when you work? Or are you a silence kind of person? Let me know. J

He wants to stay in his adopted home city, but he loves the roar of the crowd as well as their adoration. Can the star drummer step away from the buzz of fame long enough to grab what he needs with both hands or will the lure of the crowd be too much?

Matt Walker knew from the moment he got involved with Jacen that their relationship was temporary. Jacen’s a celebrity and he holds the position of the sexiest eligible bachelor of the band. Even if Matt saw a future for him and Jacen, the odds aren’t in their favor. But he can hope, right? He’s been head over heels in love with Jacen since the moment they met.

Two Turntables and a Microphone

Post by Elizabeth Silver

So I think I might be the odd-Bird-out, being as I don’t really use my celebrity crushes to construct my characters. I have, once, when I was having a bitch of a time building up Chris Lee in Where the Heart Is, since he was being evasive in my my head. I think I did well with that. But then, honestly, what red-blooded person that swings that way wouldn’t want this scrumptiousness starring in an erotic romance?

Unf. Shemar, you are just too damn sexy for mere mortals.

Anyway. I digress.

While I’ve got one HELL of a picture collection (kisses on the mouth and beyond, fun and interesting positions, places to make whoopie, and even just artistically posed individuals), what gets me going, what makes me itch for a pen, a pencil, a fucking crayon if I can’t have my laptop, is music.

Music has always been a part of my life. It lulled me into dreams as a little one, taught me to sing, inspired me to learn instruments, encouraged me to sing in front of people… And I’ve never been limited to just one or two kinds of music. I’ll get in a groove for a while, but there will always be something that can catch my eye. Rock, pop, metal, rap, country, R&B, classical, folk, classic rock, all of it. I just checked my external and I have 60 GB in my Music folder. Just ponder that for a bit while you watch the video for this week’s writerly anthem:

I had another song I was rocking earlier in the week, but this one is just perfect.

Music flows into me and whispers ideas, characters, scenes, whole stories. It gets my blood pumping and kicks me in the ass because I’m a creative force, too, even if I’ll never come up with a piece of notes and lyrics of my own. Instead, I take that energy and I write.

I’m part of another group blog, a free reads gig where a new read gets posted every week. I don’t post until July, but our theme is songs. Do you really think there was a chance in me not jumping on that bad boy and riding it like I stole it? Yeah, me either. And the song that I’m using for my inspiration! *happy sigh*

Hi, my name is Liz. I’m a Gemini, I have a touch of ADD, and I’m in love with Keith Urban.

Not only do I love music, but I love the videos, too. I love watching them, and daydreaming about the players in those 3-minute stories.

So there you go. That’s what inspires me. Or, at least some of it. My inspiration comes from all over. From people everywhere. But definitely, most definitely, from the music.

What about you? Do you listen to music when you write? Do you make soundtracks and and playlists, or do you need absolute silence?
