Writing to Market – What are your Thoughts? #writing

Hi everyone,

Today I’d like to do a quick post on writing to market. I’ve been writing for quite a few years now, and I’ve always either written whatever I felt like, or answered calls for submissions and so on. My readers are used to me having tales that are M/F, F/F, M/M/M, menage, paranormal, contemporary, long, short, etc… But I’ve never written to market – i.e. looked at what’s selling well and deliberately written a book on that topic.

Until now.

Probably the main reason I’ve never done this before is because those “crazes” for want of a better word (huh – you’d have thought a writer would be able to come up with a better word!) have never really appealed to me. Alternatively, in the case of Fifty Shades of Grey and BDSM, I was writing BDSM long before E L James hit big. Another reason is that generally I just can’t write flipping fast enough to keep up with the trends.

But now, after much encouragement from one of my writer buddies, I’ve gone and done it. I signed up for NaNoWriMo when I previously had no intention of doing so, and with barely a book idea in my head. And now, with two days to spare, I’m under 2,500 words away from “winning” NaNoWriMo (which for those of you that don’t know, the aim is to write 50,000 words in a month). With a reverse harem romance book. The first in a series of three (with potential for a fourth). Reverse harem is insanely hot right now, but the question is… will folks buy my reverse harem books? Guess there’s only one way to find out.

I’ve actually really enjoyed writing this genre – though admittedly it wasn’t something I’d given any thought to beforehand. I figured it was basically menage with a few twists and turns and differences along the way and just held on for the ride. It’s not too much of a departure from what I’ve written before, so fingers crossed my existing readers will check it out, too.

So… what are your thoughts on writing to market? Does it make a writer a sell out? Would you read a book from one of your favourite writers if you knew they’d deliberately written it to hopefully capture a piece of a large market?

Would love to know your thoughts on this!

Happy Reading,

Lucy x
