How Long Do You Like It? by Lucy Felthouse (@cw1985) #writerslife

Hi everyone,

So, how long do you like it? Now, now, don’t be rude! 😉 I’m talking about book lengths and word counts here!

As I’m sure most of you know, I write a huge amount of variety. That includes in genre, pairing and book length/word count. I just love to work on different types of projects. Admittedly, I would like to write more full-length books, but that would mean writing fewer short stories and novellas, and I often write those either because I’ve been inspired by a call for submissions, or been specifically invited to a project, which is always lovely. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to take part in all the projects I’d like to, and write all the ideas that pop into my head.

Which brings me back to my question… what word length books do you prefer? I’ve been lucky enough to have a few releases out this year, with more coming, but they’ve all been short stories or novellas. My last full-length novel was (re)released in September of last year, and also a co-authored full-length novel was released in October of last year. I’m currently working on my next one, which I hope to release in the next couple of months.

So please let me know in the comments… what book length do you prefer, and why?

Happy Reading!

Writing Through Tough Times by Lucy Felthouse (@cw1985) #writerlife

Hi folks,

Everyone has tough times – it’s an unfortunate fact of life. Another fact is that we all deal with those tough times in different ways. Some people are great at dealing with hardship – they just blast on through, coping marvellously and flicking the ‘V’ at whatever said hardship is. Others take it one step at a time, claw their way through, getting battered and bruised. And others don’t deal at all. They cry, they scream, they shout; bury their heads in the sand and crumble. None of those ways are right or wrong – like I say, everyone’s different, and we never know just what crap life is going to throw at us. We just have to get through however we can.

I’d say I’m one of those folks that falls somewhere in the middle. I get on with things, and on the surface probably seem as though I’m doing okay. I save my screaming, shouting, crying and meltdowns for behind closed doors.

It’s actually been a really tough couple of years for me, personally. I’ve suffered some major losses. And yes, I got through it, but another thing for me that suffered was my writing. As much as I wish I wasn’t, I’m an easily distracted writer. Noise, activity, annoyance, worry, grief… they can all make it nigh-on impossible for me to get any words down on the page.

I know other people actually use the aforementioned emotions and channel them into their writing. It can be cathartic for them, which is great, and likely produces some incredibly powerful writing. In the past, I have actually done that, and will likely do so in the future. But when times are incredibly tough, I’ll take whatever words my brain sees fit to provide and call them a win. And in the meantime, when things are quiet, I’ll write as much as I possibly can. I call it making hay while the sun shines.

Because, whatever happens, I try to be positive. At times, that’s pretty much impossible, but I do my best. Because that’s all we can ever do, right? Our best. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

What about you? Authors – do you find hard times stifle your writing, or do they spur it on? And non-authors – is there anything you normally do that you just can’t do when there’s something major going on in your life? Let’s talk about it – it’s important to talk about it, so we all know we’re not alone in these feelings.

Happy Reading (or writing, or whatever you’re currently working on!),
